Meningitis is an illness that can affect anyone of any age in any environment. It is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord = Meninges. If not treated quickly patient can become extremely unwell with blood poisoning called septicaemia. This can be a life threatneing condition and if the patient survives it can result in permanent damage to the brain or nerves. It can be a viral or bacterial infection.

 

Usually caught from people who carry the virus or bacteria in their nose or throat it can be spread through -

 

* Kissing

* Coughing

* Sneezing

* Sharing items such as toothbrushes and cutlery

 

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

 

** THEY VARY IN EACH INDIVIDUAL.... AND DON'T WAIT FOR THE RASH!!**

 

- High Temperature (38c / 100.4f) and above

- Headache

- Stiff neck

- Dislike of bright lights

- Vomiting

- Drowsiness or unresponsiveness

- Blotchy rash that will not fade when a glass is rolled over it

- Seizures

- Babies may sound like they are grunting, feel cold in their hands/feet and may present with a bulge at the top of their head (soft spot)

 

Note that not everyone will get all of the above symptoms - don't delay - Seek medical advice immediately - Call 111 or 999

Meningitis vaccinations availble at JA Medical -

 

 

*  Protect against strains ACWY -

 

These vaccinations are accessible on the NHS to the following groups-

 

- 14 years old at school

- 17 year olds attending University

- Some travellers visiting high risk countries in Africa

 

At JA medical we can offer the vaccination to any of the following groups -

 

- Children over the age of 1 year to 65 years

- Any child or teenager that missed the NHS immunisation schedule

- Children over the age of 1 year to 65 years travelling to Africa who is considered a high risk

- Children over the age of 1 year to 65 years travelling to Hajj or Umrah - Certificates included

 

(Doses are recommended according to age and we charge £70 per dose)

 

 

* Protect against Strain B - 

 

- Meningits B vaccination is accessible to new born babies as part of the NHS Immunisation schedule

 

At JA medical we can offer the vaccination to any of the following groups -

 

- 4th dose for any baby that has completed the NHS immunisation programme

- Any baby who missed the NHS immunisation programme form 8 weeks of age

- Any child / teenager up to the age of 25 years

 

( Doses are recommended according to age and we charge £140 per dose)

 

 

*  Protects against Strain C

 

- Meninigitsi C is offered to children at 1 year on the NHS,

 

At JA Medical we can offer the vaccination to the following groups -

 

- Any from 6 months of age

- Any teenager adult up to the age of 25 years
